The aim of this book is to show the relation between mechanical behaviour of industrial materials and finite element solutions when considering all experimental parameters and uncertainties. It involves three fundamental parts; (i) an introduction to stress theory, solid mechanics and experimental methods; (ii) a presentation of different mechanical characterisation techniques including uniaxial tensile test, torsion, fatigue, creep and impact tests; and (iii) a contextualisation using solid modelling, finite element methods and numerical simulation at various scales.

The book was conceived for graduate students entering the mechanical and aerospace engineering fields. As well as highlighting the importance of experimental work it places a strong focus on sound and day-to-day experimental procedures useful for industrials with demand for simplified programmes for extracting mechanical properties from material specimens. While not requiring previous exposure to solid mechanics; it covers topics such as materials stress-strain behaviour to numerical models, tensile testing and its limitations and the advantages and disadvantages associated with regression analysis Techniques suitable for both practicing engineers and researchers are strongly emphasised throughout.

From the characterization of the solids to accelerated testing by simulation, experiment on solid mechanics is essential in the entire development of mechanical devices. Sometimes, experimentally based only models can add the necessary aspects to understand the phenomena being investigated, although merely complex enough so to be efficiently simulated through computer models.

This book details the classical tool in the simulated approach to engineering objects, along with the practices that radically transformed this field over past twenty years: mechanical phones, sign analysis, statistical computing, measurement design, standard imprecision analysis, and other practices. “Experimental Mechanicsof Solids andStructures” also extensively replaces the ways mechanical research are conducted: starting with the experimental simulation strategem, with its very own assumptions; further to the current acquisition procedure, which occurs systematically and consistently; and finally, to a reliable method for analyzing the outcomes acquired, where there might be significant imprecisiones.

Описание книги от Jérôme Molimard

From the characterization of materials to accelerated life testing, experimentation with solids and structures is present in all stages of the design of mechanical devices. Sometimes only an experimental model can bring the necessary elements for understanding, the physics under study just being too complex for an efficient numerical model. This book presents the classical tools in the experimental approach to mechanical engineering, as well as the methods that have revolutionized the field over the past 20 years: photomechanics, signal processing, statistical data analysis, design of experiments, uncertainty analysis, etc. Experimental Mechanics of Solids and Structures also replaces mechanical testing in a larger context: firstly, that of the experimental model, with its own hypotheses; then that of the knowledge acquisition process, which is structured and robust; finally, that of a reliable analysis of the results obtained, in a context where uncertainty could be important.
