Eve & Caleb is a fast-paced and beautifully written coming-of-age novel for fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Unfortunately, her immaculate transition from childhood's first loves to a world with new faces and hearts and sexual awakening fails to create anything too transformative of a leap. And when these characters start mixing unnecessarily closely, especially their parents and friends, it breeds disjointedness. Nevertheless, E&C truly is one of the freshest reads in recent YA memories, filled with tangled emotions, facing hard truths and boasting terrific characterizations throughout.Carey explores her young heroes' dual lives as both wealthy Londonites, and the affluent American aristocracy who own the local historically significant landmark, Castle Lightwood. Caleb wears a naive face but has tangible abilities while Eve manages to keep her teenage angst but also has an intuitive understanding of life that stands out. At one point, she describes teen romance as an illogical relationship built on inexperience and desires, leading to its sudden termination as if she had finally escaped.Yet the major stumbling block for me was how Eve screamed "I want to be a mother" at fifteen, which no fifteen-year-old should ever say, and failed to capture the amazing vulnerability such a revelation presents. There is instead the occasional devaluation or parental snub when best friends arouse paternal curiosity.Both teens' quest for stability, friends and affection begins to balance out by the middle third of this Trilogy but a couple of plights are resolution?d otherwise abruptly. Back-stories - intentionally introduced at the end of each volume - may deepen their world-building aspirations, though failing to fully offset the occasional cheesiness and inconsistency across volumes despite showing up intricately written. But the dreamy, mystical elements - of reference to the series' supernatural fiction - loaded situations and truly insecure and emotionally aware points of view skillfully tied together in an evocative celebration of teenage friendship and loneliness. This series will leave you tearing up and wishing for so much more, praising what it does well.
