Martha is a widow who lives on her farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She is lonely and wishes for a mate. Eli, a young man from the Amish community, comes to Martha's farm in hopes of earning money to open his own carriage shop.
The two begin to spend time together, and Eli becomes infatuated with Martha. He soon realizes that he wants to marry her, but Martha does not share these feelings. They have a great deal in common, however, and are able to find joy in each other's company.
