Manu Bodin's "El Escritor y La Cineastа" is a book about a man named Manuel living in Paris's most unsavory neighborhood - at the bottom of his country. Manuel works as a scrap-writer and manager at the Green Bird Pub (named for an alcoholic beverage itself). One day, a young woman bumps into him and asks if he's a writer. The young girl, whose name is Maïté, is struck by the shabbiness and sense of loneliness surrounding Manuel. While talking, she tries to persuade him to move away from the slums and start writing seriously. The rest of the novel chronicles Manuel's complex interactions with Maïté and his developing relationship with a neighbor called Leo. The story explores the angst associated with coming of age in the slum, of artistic creativity and of misplaced hope.
