The two-week holiday Р. S. Sherriff

About the Book Twenty-one-year-old Lucy Stevens' parents have decided to, as they put it, "hit the road" and go for a fortnight's holiday by train and foot to the seaside town of Bognor Regis. What begins in reality as a beachside apartment, Linley's old boarding house (where he and Stephen had such a great time 21 years before) is massively transposed into family history, the legacy of Charles Darwin, and moments of heartbreak set against the backdrop of their ambitious suburban backwaters. It is September 1874 and the Stevenses have prepared themselves for the two weeks by packing carefully. Their aunts and uncles will stay with them - Aunt Letitia, Aunt Amelia, Uncle Bernard, Uncle Arthur, but the rest of the family will spend the fortnight away visiting various relatives (the Parsons and their son, Lizzie, and her deaf-mute husband Tom, the Gainsbours, old schoolfriend Ada) who live nearby. There will be a few sightseeing trips to Brighton and Eastbourne. Bernard and Arthur will enjoy a couple of days drinking in Bedford. Gilbert will accompany Mrs Parsons to Penbourne Fair, where at last, after repeated requests from his nanny, Miss Haywards, he can indulge in a picnic on the grass near the car show. But this leaves Emma to arrange most of what she and Alfred gap between sentence booking commitments for their orphaned sister Kate, son Louis, and, now that it is agreed that she and Alfred, see Louisa in Devon for Christmas. Robert CV is lucky: Armadale station is just a 35-minute walk from the Bunnings Home Depot carpark, less than a five-minute jaunt if you get off the train on the opposite platform. It is eight o'clock in the morning in Eltham, London, so the trip takes roughly between an hour and an hour quarter past; if the engines chug for over five minutes while changing platforms, about one and a quarter will pass before he strides down the corridors to head back to his own little tower block. At Christmas, holidays are often packed full; great-aunt Millicent is here as well as cousin Norah and her husband Lew. Patrick learns of his cousin's imminent arrival on Thursday, escorting a rough-looking man into the garden. Kenn so promises, thinking Tony was very casual even so. Closeness may be reached between them in large part because each amuses the other in some way. He likes the young Norah, who is fair-haired, blue-eyed, ample bosomed, dainty-fingered, inexhaustible in their converse, unfailing in praise of Patrick.

© The Estate of RC Sherriff © А.
