Dick Merriwell presents himself as a veteran adventurer and the narrator of his escapades in the East, and prides himself upon being a 'diplomat upon wheels'. This mixture of prose and poems uses rather slangy and corny diction. It is believed to be a spoof on Oriental travel memoirs of the period. Dick is perched on one shoulder of 'Maturi', a khaki-clad but deferential native servant sent to transport him across the Persian Sultanate in search of ball games.\nHe traverses diverse scenes, from Sheikh-dominated towns where social convention dictates segregation into classes, to battles without end against Tippoo (Tippu) Sahib and his runaway camel force in defiance of Napoleon Bonaparte. However, Dick's story takes an unexpected course, involving not war but anti-war protest. Disappointed in London politics, he convinces a group of fellow men determined to avoid fighting to disguise themselves as apes and journey as their military cannon fodder across Muscat, emulating an earlier Neapolitan cockney squadron who dressed as Neapolitan lovely, absolutely hilarious even to this day.\nSeeing action all along his voyage and encountering varied bizarre characters, then lightening into crises both odd and comic, Dick not only puts himself in peril so much as he teases and terrifies those around him into believing that travel with him is folly, his plan resulting in a plot to turn him back, not testifying too well to his faithful servant Maturi.\nBewildered Muscatans finally understand the misunderstanding and welcome Dick back to normal kinds of adventure, many of which become acute with hostility from enemies on land and sea.\nThe situation takes a turn for the worse, deadly, when Dick's young ward Wilhelmina (Dolly) is captured by Barbary pirates on a jaunt the boy took without his pale parents' consent by pretending to go in hunting expedition.\nThere are two books in volume, known as Pranks and Lively Times (as they were also published separately).
