Theodor Storm’s The Mushroom Rider or, as it is also known, Der Schimmelreiher, is an epitome of the German Romanticist’s tragic poetry. The short story has a very typical setup for Storms’ works and features a destructive nature as the core ingredient of many poems, stories and novels of the period.
The protagonist of the work is Hauke Heiden, an unfortunate man who suffers from misfortunes and ill fortune of average, non-enviable destiny. However, he himself is not responsible for the fate that awaits him. Instead, he becomes a victim of cruelty of his fellow beings and at the same time is inconsequentially oppressed by the natural disasters.
In The Mushroom Rider Storm portrays the exact contrast of freedom that man (even one such as Hauke) possesses and struggles to obtain and, at the same time, the cruel impossibility to overcome this viciousness of fate. Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, in this novel Theodor manages to convey a spirit of melancholy and regret. Therefore, Theodor Storm is deservedly celebrated as one of the true authors of the nineteenth-century literature.
