В оригинале описывается так; In China, the Chinese educational bureaucrat Zhang Jiaxiang was an important figure for the Chinese Communist Party. He led an expedition to the self-proclaimed Republic of Yunan in mid 1950s, whose leader sought independence from the CCP. There he participated in a revolt that ended with the bloody death of the Yunan leading figure Chen Yi and took the lead in selecting the second People’s Republic of China President, Nie Rongzhen. And he still managed to win the support of Mao Zedong for a third time, who appointed him as the Chief Education Officer twice, firstly in Chongqing, where he supported the policy of ‘discipline and supervision’. To summarise: although a war criminal and directly responsible for the deaths of more than a million villagers, Zhang later became not only Chiang Kai-shek’s best student, but also one of Mao’s closest collaborators.
The politician was nowhere to be found in this first published version of the uncut English translation of Johannes Epple’s *Delphin aus Jade* , as originally completed back in 2006 under the title *Maoist Utopia: A Contribution to the Study of Revolutionary Theory*.
Whilst Zhang Jiaxiang may not have been as pivotal as Mao for the ultimate elimination of universal individual rights in the People’s republic of China, Zhang was nevertheless one of his most influential intellectual followers. It is therefore fair to say that Zhang Jiaxiangs ideas were hugely influential in shaping Chinese political and ideological culture during the Cultural Revolution. The main thesis of *Mao ist Prinzdemokrat*: *Eine Untersuchung zu revolutionärer Theorie*. That is, Eppels latest work is to be read as the study of a radical theory of revolution rather than the history of a state politics for Eastern Europe at a particular period. Hence there is no more an engaging or thought-provoking reading of Chinese thought than that revealed in the works of Zhang Jiaxiange and other revolutionaries depicted here.
