Ludwig Bechsteins "Das Bergmannchen von Eisenstadt" (German: 'The Mountain Man of Eisenstadt') is a well-known children's book that tells the story of a little boy named Fritz who is on an adventure to rescue his friends from danger. It's a classic tale of adventure and courage that has been beloved by generations of readers.
Fritz is a young mountain man from Eisenstadt, who travels on horseback with his dog, Bibi, to the nearby valley, where his friends Jasper and Wilhelm have been captured by robbers. Fritz disguises himself as a bandit and enters the thief's camp, pretending to be a new recruit to gain their trust. But as he soon learns, the robber's leader, Zeller, is an evil man who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal.
On his journey, Fritz meets a young woman named Ina, whom he falls in love with. But before they can build a relationship, the thieves' plan succeeds in capturing Jasper, Willem and the two girls from the village for ransom. Without Zeller even realizing it, Ina sacrifices her life to save the prisoners, which makes it all the more difficult for Fritz and Bibi to fulfill their mission.
In the end, Fritz and his loyal companion manage to defeat Zeller and save their friends, but loss of hope overwhelms them to such a degree, that they cannot continue on without saving Ina. Instead, they stay behind to watch over her burial, knowing that she gave her life for a cause that was greater than all of them. As the three are laying flowers on her grave, Fritz realizes that he would rather fight beside her all his life than enjoy her eternal company as a corpse.
