This Special Publication includes most of the chapters presented at the First International Workshop on Deltaic Systems (1993) and some additional ones that make this book a very comprehensive reference source for both advanced undergraduates and graduate students in Earth Sciences interested in sedimentology and geology around sediment-filled channels and lakes. All chapters deal with the sedimentology of coarse-grained deltas and focus mainly on description of steep-sided flanks and their respective sedimentary systems, processes, mechanisms and models. In addition, various global examples are addressed, with special focus on submarine processes of falling water element accumulation and interactions with different types of tectonic regime. Through-out the manuscript, a emphasis is given to the subaquatic realm of coarse deltaic channel beds, sedimentary filling processes and associated facies architectures. This volume is thus an important contribution not only to students, but also to sedimentologists interested in all aspects of delta formation, growth and infilling, in its many forms and its global or regional distributions.
