James R. Runyan, a seasoned private investigator, knew Mercy Waunani wasn't in a safe place—even though the consistent death threats had stopped until the moment of her disappearance from her Brooklyn apartment four months ago. It didn't matter that Mercy was merely his client, abandoned by her boyfriend but now stalked by an apparent cultist who sought her for his own reasons. The threat had been real and active enough that Runyan's thinking veered subconsciously to rescuing her beyond even his usual jurisdiction.
Runyan whisked Mercy to an outdoor indigenous tribal community, the Crooked Arrows, where he housed her in a protected residence in hopes that he could provide her continuous custody.
