China and the Manchus - Herbert Allen Giles

'China and the Manschus' is a book by Herbert Allen Giles, often regarded as one of the earliest and most influential linguists of the English language. Giles' main work consisted in systematic collection and publication of different forms of native languages. From his collection, 200 grammatical points were identified and attributed to six distinct stages of prehistoric development or origin of western Indo-European from eastern Aryan and Semitic stocks. Giles became widely regarded for the elaboration of the 19th century scientific method in Oriental philology, while his historical linguistic method of reconstruction based on the analysis of types of vocabulary, grammar forms, stereotypical constructions, image etc. has become the direct ancestor of subsequent syntactical modeling or word-formation approaches in comparative literature.
