"Villette," is an unassuming, but moving tale from Charlotte Bronto. Although it is one of the lesser known works from her masterspeech, it is considered among the most poetic examples of her writing. In terms of its influence, this sensitive story was a major beacon for feminist literature of its time.

The story tells us a tale of two young sisters, Emma and Marianne Hill, who lost their mother at a young age. They were raised by their Aunt Taylor in New England, whose domineering personality likely played a significant role in shaping their personalities. However, due to Taylor's obsessive love for her hero, William Vylett, she neglects to properly care for the Hilling sisters and leaves them for most of their lives. This leads to a complicated love triangle between the two sisters, William, their disinterested Aunt, and mutual friends Anne and her half-sister Helen. Despite initial happiness that Vylet obtains with his fiancée Anne, as the tale progresses we learn that William has harbored crushes on all three women, ultimately prompting the narrative turn. Vyett is forced to navigate his problematic love towards both Anne and Helen, eventually seeking solace in Marianne, over the life of the book.

Описание книги от Charlotte Bronte

"When I was a girl I went to Bretton about twice a year, and well I liked the visit. The house and its inmates specially suited me. The large peaceful rooms, the well-arranged furniture, the clear wide windows, the balcony outside, looking down on a fine antique street, where Sundays and holidays seemed always to abide—so quiet was its atmosphere, so clean its pavement—these things pleased me well." "Villette" is Charlotte Bronte's lesser-known masterpiece. It is full of wonderful imagery and colour for the imagination.
