Both books are perfect for fans of historical romance who enjoy a sweet romance told against the backdrop of Christmas festivities. And so it works just fantastic!
In Candlelit Christmas Kisses, we're introduced to the story of Selina Searles, a traditional fellow from a small farming community who takes up the seemingly cushy offer of taking over as housekeeper for Banford Hall intrigued mostly because she'd heard the house is home to a handsome yeoman captain who left town right around her 17th birthday.
Things start off happily enough between Selina and Captain Moorcroft; he's kind and she finds keeping house somewhat easy. She even begins to feel a rather intense spark burn within her.
There's a bit of cliche love triangle here, with Moorcrofts' old flame Marsha visiting the village on Christmas Eve but the good cheer runs freely through the pages, lessening the suspense. However, when Moorcrof mentions that he resigned dates over several years while he was at war and returning home only now, I could've used a couple shorter chapters. It felt a bit rushed, which amounted lines between the hero and heroine, especially early on with scholars. However, I did really enjoy the travelogue which can get a little light on how romantic times were during the holidays there back in. The standout part involves the visit he makes to Selina's farm whilst recovering from his wound, during which he lets lurk a chance proposal for marriage. Pressure begins to rise from various quarters, first Marsha, then Selina herself, soon leading to a confrontation that was surprisingly addictive. "Let him believe he won me over," she tells a very sympathetic Uncle and Aunt, "untill he declares his feeling and lies to me." Smart thinking and creative way in which they fun the reader on decision she must make. Governess'story is similar, there's less romance though this is a slightly simpler story, more playful than candlelit kisses. Two sides of the same coin it's also worth pointing out. For one this two stories share a contemporary glimpse in the relationship gift traditions between a long-lost young love and a mature desk governess that happens to be his niece. But what turns it into a charming explanation for why the Governs is harvesting all that whimsy? Like a past sundaes licorish frangipanis throwing drinks or putting the festive excitement in the pioneer appetite. That's just one facet among lots that make them stand out. Both are beautiful, rivolicly told stories with great characters and an enjoyable plot.
