Broken Miles is the story of three generations of women who endure the hardships and persecution of being black in Whitehaven, Nova Scotia. It is set in Broken Hill, a tiny town in rural Canada in which a newsreel found in 1930 documents the transportation of over 200 Black passengers from Nova Scotia to a work camp in Kansas - Copperopolis workhouse. This infamous plantation, as the Copperhead mine was called, lost its name later on so that it could not be confused with the legitimate operator of a section of mine. The copper mine where the captives worked shut down before the end of the decade due to a miners' strike.
The short novel takes place from 1914 to 1979, at first between Halahai Bienvenue (Kingsley) and her brother Billy (which is named after the plantation workers leader Thomas Mooney, who often be called the "Father of Confederation"), and then alternating between three generations. Each generation featured in the novel has been given a surname: the male family has the name Telford; the females are known as Kingsley; and, in the final generation, the unnamed children take the surname Wolfe.\nThe novel deals with slavery abolition, sexual racism, and yearly searches for missing Aboriginal children.
