Being the tough guy he likes to think he is (or pretends to be, at least) Brokedown Cowboy landlord Connor Garrett does everything he can to keep people at arm’s length…and himself from becoming emotionally vulnerable. The arrival of beautiful stranger Felicity surprisingly and immediately both intrigues and fills Connor with trepidation. Apart from his sister, no other person has ever been allowed into his soft and wounded heart. He vows to protect his family (his ex-wife and son - not that he was any good at it) from Felicity's hurt attempts to get closer, masked as just she would by helping her with her job-related problems. It helps that she's homeless and flat out broke, and a stay on his property while she searches for work and rebuilds her life is the only option open to her.
Connor is not wrong when he chooses to take cautious approach appropriation due the types of love he's struggled with before. Pulchritudinous, sweet-as-pie Felicity might have an innocent-seeming, child-like appeal. She's beautiful, a masterful cook and definitely not the broken, damaged, abandoned runaway she claims to be. Luckily for Connor, they must spend a great deal of time together; RV dies on a little highway, transportation service never arrives when needed and Felicity needs to replace her new truck that has been impounded; a repossessed vehicle is about to become a major hindrance to her plans to escape a past that, she so artfully describes, leads right to prison. Such similarities between her and his ex amply inspire him to cling to the friendship building between them as a bulwark against everyday temptation.
