Christopher Jackson’s Black in America explores how African Americans have experienced and continue to experience racial inequality in this country. The beginning of the 20th century was a time when W. E. B. Dubois identified this “color line” as America’s primary problem, as he noted that race continues to negatively impact individuals, families, and entire communities.
Though this term is no longer exclusive to racial terms like black and white in today’s America, it still rings true. During a time of plummeting racial discussion, our society has seemingly embraced a “colorblind” ideology and cast off any thoughts of racial conflict or disadvantage as this new belief system encapsulates the idea of meritocracy, albeit hand-in-glove with systemic racism.
Instead, this book seeks to shed light on how Black residents of America exist in often uncomfortable situations of significant racial divides, ranging from getting poorer within our privileges to achieving profound wealth while still experiencing abject poverty, with police discrimination as differential as their rights and protections under the same umbrella of our law.
We get to see how this works through the lenses of other critically important topics such as residential segregation within communities where jobs remain in exclusive areas for mostly white professions and a more Bourdieusian context. All of these moments paint a picture of how it can be challenging for many Black Americans who often continue to endure disparities within their scope of work and life.
Overall, this comprehensive study will help those who may not have even considered such concerns to better understand how different systems and structures negatively impact the lives of Black people each and every day; Jackson makes a strong case for the need for continued efforts at resisting this in a post-Civil Rights America.

Описание книги от Christina Jackson
At the start of the twentieth century, the pre-eminent black sociologist, W.E.B. DuBois, identified the color line as America's great problem. While the color line is increasingly variegated beyond black and white, and more openly discussed than ever before as more racial and ethnic groups call America home, his words still ring true.

Today, post-racial and colorblind ideals dominate the American narrative, obscuring the reality of racism and discrimination, hiding if only temporarily the inconvenience of deep racial disparity. This is the quintessential American paradox: our embrace of the ideals of meritocracy despite the systemic racial advantages and disadvantages accrued across generations.

This book provides a sociology of the Black American experience. To be Black in America is to exist amongst myriad contradictions: racial progress and regression, abject poverty amidst profound wealth, discriminatory policing yet equal protection under the law. This book explores these contradictions in the context of residential segregation, labor market experiences, and the criminal justice system, among other topics, highlighting the historical processes and contemporary social arrangements that simultaneously reinforce race and racism, necessitating resistance in post-civil rights America.
