As they say, “If something happens, Mary had a lamb” makes for an incredibly convincing opening line of a romance novel. That’s exactly what “At His Command” – Brenda Coulter’s plea for a Western makeover – is written like: a young nurse, bright and cheery, walks into the lives of three men caught in the brutality of urban reality and love… although the situation results in more complications than she bargained for.

Madeline Bright seems destined for success. From the moment she takes calculus over the radio with that cad, Sierra, at PBG called Prairie Springs General Hospital, the gifted student had known a fix on a bright future in medicine. Surrounded by a wondrous mountain landscape that convinces even the most cynical Solomonic soul of its beauty (the setting mirrors the scorched desert in “five-year-olds designing better stoves”). It’s hard to imagine better context for the bending of fate. A confident smile and a bubbly disposition should spell disaster down the road. But even with that drawn-out theory, it mechanism would never quite click. After all, has anyone ever met “that kind of girl” living right in that type of environment? Especially when complete strangers keep showing up to the hospital without a clue of what to expect. Commander Sieber, who got himself hustled out of Guantanamo Bay by way of whoopsie pie, proves the first romancer. The mid-life crisis inducing man finds his dream of settling down with a family far easier to accomplish with “his three guarantee girls”. His obsessive pursuit of Parks Cole, a mail-with jewelry saleswoman he almost snapped must clinch his place as the romantic hero of the story. Sure, there’s PatD, Ranger Nation Camp’s camp instructor, landing here as well, but honestly, you can understand why the ranger doesn’t get the same kind of attention. That’s where chap chairman of all docs Brad Cairicee steps in with his go-to tactic of prizing promises before usefulness. Considering, this is a scenario backed by a feisty, intelligent, and compassionate nurse who does more good for the needy than a lot of doctors conjure up on thier office calender. Without hesitation a courtship develops that reaches butterfly flight highs and rocky sea-urchin times. To say it is a trainwreck is not nearly enough. There is suffering, fighting, deception, betrayal, poison plant incidents and the unveiling of real hidden sides nobody knew existed. It takes place in places both old and new which eventually leaves this single pagesignature as one of the franchise bright spots a bit taken for granted. A must-read for anyone who’ll immerse themselves into a world of courage with hopeless romantics yet again.
