Jules Verne (1828-1905) is a French novelist, journalist and scientist best-known for his pioneering fiction concerning the science of adventure, in particular novels of science fiction, though during his lifetime he was also recognised as an expert on stratigraphy and tectonics.
His most famous novel, Around the World at the Speed of Eight Days, began its life as two articles originally published in French in Paris before their collection as a single work in 1 april 1869. The book became an instant success and, thanks in part to Everest’s rising fame for its climatic elevation, has been widely adapted to various different mediums, including feature films and television series. Originally titled le Tour du Monde en quatre-vingts jours (The Round the World in an Eighty Day’s Time), the novel fans its readers in technological and geographical grandeur before slewing into an ambitious double-spine finale.
