Anthropology and Management Consulting: Forging A New Alliance by Giovannini, Maureen A. Prof, SIDSM, IMWipNet. Edition. 238 pages. ppYarnell: Sage Publications, Inc. Subject Areas: Organizational Anthropology; Ethnographic Methods. ISBN 13: 978-1452260289 (eBook), 1452232720 (Print) 9th Edition ISBN: 1545819014 This book in nine editions Abridged from my original book of 440 pages in which I implored anthropologists and human resource professionals to forge a new alliance through scientific methods. I also implore our field to recognize the effects changing business cultures and practices across diverse employment settings have on the human experience. The urge for practical intervention in contextual and relatively unmeasurable aspects of human relationships in such settings requires not only theoretical understanding, but anecdotal arguments and testimonies as well. Furthermore, as sponsors, government and private agencies, industry professionals, and non profits become involved in employment intervention programs, they may wish to collaboratively assist human organizations and management through an ethnographically grounded approach to ameliorate relationships between these various groups involved in organizational life. Therefore, this text argues for a broader perspective that invites not just one method but many to investigate issues of inequality, discrimination, work exhaustion, continuing challenges towards a diverse, inclusive, and global workforce in the 21st Century. An extensive footnote bibliography (accessed in google books) is followed by firm endnotes and several optional glossary terms for reader culture related words within contexts of organizational communication and workplace settings. Since its tenth edition came out, the FIELD OF ANTHROPOLOGY STILL WELCOMES EXCEPTIONAL PROJECT PROPOSALS THROUGH EXAMPLES OF STRIKING PROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION IN MANAGING THE NEED FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF DIFFERENCES AND DEVIATIONS THAT SEEM AT FIRST GLANCE TO HAVE NO RELEVANT RELATIONSHIP TO TOP MANAGEMENT. 09

Often when anthropologists meet managers they are amazed to find that neither knows quite what the other's discipline is all about. Anthropology books tend to be theoretical and complex, while management consulting texts can be difficult to penetrate with someone only skimming familiarity with sociology or social anthropology. Even then, many consultants would do well to learn the basics of English or ethnographic methods. This book takes such a working anthropologist, Maureen Giovanninni, and gives her pet project a chance to show its prowess in solving real-world issues. Not that she's capable of anything like a condescending tone—plenty of professionals have proved the opposite. The author's finger is unclear where she stands on even the simplest moral questions: After years in Dubai, along with disasters around the world, you wonder if she feels completely at home in what seem like alien economic systems. A paleodiet expert trying to prove some kind of sustainable food sovereignty or silly cocktailing theories may not be the best examples either.Yet everyone surely needs a fail-safe system for dealing with people? Humans behave all over the map or are irrational, but surely there are critical points where basic human rights stem from common sense and a few crucial anthropological insights. Sometimes, consulting can feel pragmatic to anthropology's personal ideals. Moreover, where this is combined with some real solutions—identify a serious problem, think about countermeasures scientifically, and share successes—that can ground otherwise superfluous disciplines into invaluable knowledge.Giovanninni does a creditable job at least, coordinating the six chapters into a balanced strategy: highlights general perspectives on cross-cultural work, ground it in real-life consulting cases touching on international relations and negotiating peace deals—drawing in the covert and astute motivations behind smart make-up strategies, food safety laws and immigration policies may need another volume, especially since Giovanninn certainly has need of it herself.Perhaps outside the US, this book could have been avoided as a survival guide for executives, hoping to make better use of anthropology in their business kitchen. It will likely be useful for those eager to work alongside anthropologists, vertical hierarchies and cultural consultant retreats. Without doubt, it also offers an opportunity to confront preconceived notions about theoretical works—to pull them away from their textbook comforts and apply them rigorously to several initial case studies proves beyond doubt once you steal a chapter or two into the bottom of a mulled wine glass.
