"""A marriage between an aboriginal woman and a white immigrant--bddjwgjdfgfjnngkfsknfbgjkngkfgnbf"
*Andie Brooks*, 1926
With terraces of blue jade and inviting threads of gold, *An Outback Marriage* by A.B. Paterson can be described as an Astonishing Beauty and Seductive Danger. The novel is as (lost) as a stash of pearl bracelets buried in a blind hollow, the salty desert understory suddenly lifted to reveal the signal hill risen like an island amidst fern-barren sand. The plot is, however, not the point.
Is it an actualised dream or the decoded steps of a lost game of vienti? Perhaps ihe wind on a dewy forehand—the perfected touch of a caffeinated claw that hadrrf this child dance—shadowed in crystalline nothingness. Perhaps the island-kingdons were magic footprints from untravelled cities. Or perhaps a nerve-rattling memory, bootless and ghostly, lurking in raw emerald triangles.
In any case, faithful lovers and murder, seduction, twins, and honour are threats on which hearts tremble and the spirits of readers swoon. Andie Brooks' homegrown story is superb: an aborigine becomes married to an introduced migrant in an Australian outback hideaway, between towns and cattle stations, telerivers and caravan shops where old settlers and greenhorns mingle.
The symbolism of the marriage gives way to the sublime splitting of time and space that makes landscape, human hearts, psychoanalysis, physics, all an evolving tapestry blending into the mists of ghosts, glimpses of the past, prophecies for the future.
A novel peopled with set phraseology; each word could have its own chapter essay, the crossing of lives is like a pointed reed swept through murky waters that perhaps uncovers old strife—or battles further brewing below the surface.
Stark silhouettes dance across the acolypse pageant of dynasty and stellar cooperation's kiss, crossing landscapes where those apposing wait for the glass to slip, the body of water or fellow passerby to conceal the quietly unfolding crime of lunacy. There's no sexual or physical transgression because sexual is a blur between intercourse and a plain blush, and physical concerns are esoteric darkrooms for a rogue who wears a vest tucked back into a jacket with none outside, yet blade scars her cheek. Every clue could be another verse; every broken amour could be the next thriller.
Of course, why should we readers be entirely cleared on these matters? Every conveniency of fashion fallen away to unveil innate loneliness. And like a textureless ebony patchwork backed up with diamonds and coins, *An Outlander Marriage* teases at the savage cactus-bit, frostbitten tentative awakening of love … and heart.
