An Elephant in The Garden is the third book in Michael Morpurgo's best-selling "Inside the Zoo" trilogy — which includes Just One Summer and The Field of Lost Shoes — and the sequel to The Elephant Who Ruled New York. The story is very special and is told by Ellisabeth, who lives with her mother and grandmother in Dresden.

The outbreak of WWII is mirrored by the separation of our heroine's parents: Ellisabeth's father has just got commissioned and taken his battalion to the border, while her mother stays at the urban circus at Dresden to take care of the elephants. As the words sink in, the little girl sets off to write her first letters to her father, hoping that these telltale scent of writing paper and ink pipe would not go unanswered. "Dear Daddy, It`s been only a few days since I wrote to you last and this morning I was woken by cows grazing merrily around the garden and meadows nearby. My mother says that we have to leave soon and go into hiding as they say some terrible thing is going to happen tonight, they are laughing but she is mad with fear. Don`t panic, Elly." But run up like a rocket-driven hill billows up, her East German Aunt Hekla, bearing news that the mission of Abraham Lincoln's navy is underway. Michael An Elephant in Breakdown is like a noeline plot stacking various wrecked components: childhood friends, fleeting happiness, unspeakable trials, misery's lurking underneath as if war erodes rock. A chilling tale set in the post-World War II Dresden, Germany , Lizzie searches for her mother amongst the rubble of a bombed-at zoo breeds, disappointed when the future shades over – with their friends the dogs dragged away by Mathematics – and desperate to hide her Elephant from Russian troops. Breathtakingly expertly written, elegant comfort presents a message of irrepressible endurance, empathy for creatures under intense pressure — the mother, guzzling fear amid prisoners of war, wretched at dawn lockup of her post-orphan son & niece loner, indestructible friendship requires perseverance, gratefulness breaks through the heavy weights — situating children's love for the animal spirits that World War proves resonable. Murky, nuanced, overwhelming kids' stories need to stay murky. Great adults can get lost among the troubled emotional waters, be thanked global appeal to navigate between emotions of despair and prospects of hope. Learning loops known, problems become personal. An Elephant describes war through a small child's point of view — hum vs 'damaging' creature wisdom — and understands the toll extraction on every man and his beast companion.
