Harald Rӧser's "Adieu" (Seventh Edition 2005) consists of the first movement of Schumann's Piano Sonata No.1. The novelty of any work of his lies in the fact that the 'Darker Pastorale' is performed not in the standard key of D major, but is written in D minor. This allows Schumann to create such melodic lines based on dark harmonies.
An interpretation of this piece alone offers a wide range of challenges. Its crescendo and diminuendo movements play off the enormous dynamic range, while dynamic intonation, scalicization, and ornamentation lend it dignity and depth. Schumann expertly incorporates harmonic and melodic interplay, each melody supporting the other and demanding as often as they soar. A brilliant display of virtuoso violin technique, the piece makes for compelling reading on many levels.
