Southey's Cachinhas Douradas : The Gold Closets of Abilene A portuguese poetry/novel hybrid, the work is at once a notable heroine in the evolving Southey genre and its writer's finest achievement.
The book follows Queimada Alves (Faja Dolorosa), a poor young woman who survives through sexual services and petty thieving in Salvador until her landlord forces her to move to Abilene, Texas, as a land buyer's house-maid. Oreirinhas, purchased and shipped to America with Queimada, now find themselves no longer part of the marketplace but become objects of muse, sexuality and identity for their forlorn Irish-Brazilian nurse. Oreirinha of course is a pastiche of Bothwell and Rosinante and a homage to the character 'Iska Purisima (Isabella the Pure) in Fernando Pessoa's novel Cavaleiros do Ultramar (Warriors of the Far East).
True to the robust optimistic vibe of Southey original poetry, Oreirinharta הר קידוש ברוך הוא (Dourado Closet) is lighthearted, fiercely evocative and gay; pungent with vestigia of Oportunistas dialogos (Sampaio Martins' experimental poetry) and Villa Real de San Antonio's golden-brown painted architecture. It is 'the sequel to Southey poems on American themes like Madeira, Absalom and the United States - Abel Shalom reads in 1806, published to celebrate his Acquisitive Verses'.
Southey begins: 'Talking about foreign nations may sound ridiculous or like I am hungry, however, I am more diligent, more engaged in their histories than my own'. And the parallel exists not only in terms of the writing-subject, but also in a sense of metaphysical displacement, ensconced within the mundane particularities of domestic service and boarder shyness that permeate Southey chronicles of New World hardship.
It would be difficult to overstate the canonical consideration this late forgotten gem should occupy in the rostrum of English poetry - it an abandoned but deserving dreamscape of affective possibility and rootless Americanness.
