In this series of 17 lectures based on his great work "Thepsychologyofhumansecurity," James March, one of America's most distinguished social psychologists, examines and analyzes the psychological complexities inherent in security, self-concept, peer group involvement, and many others in important literary works across time periods. Much of March's work is experimental, employing primarily qualitative methods in order to make contributions to theory where tradition has struggled. March additionally draws selective inferences from the formal analysis of standard experimental paradigms. March makes use of early theorists to perform analyses on outdated theoretical models, identify potential methodological and interpretive errors, and predict future research directions. Further, in lieu of merely critiquing existing theories, he suggests new approaches that cut against the grain of current scientific perspectives. Moreover, March highlights complex methodological, theoretical, and policy issues involved in individual versus group oriented security behavior. This series can be read independently as an entertaining exploration of time-honored pieces of literature or in tandem with other volumes by March and colleagues that focus specifically on one or more components of the triad of change, organization, and adaptation posited to be inherent conditions of all human activity.
